Portugal Totoloto, also known as Portugal Totoloto 5/49, is one of the premier lottery games in Portugal.

It offers a decent minimum jackpot and an easy format that makes it popular with people worldwide.

Aside from this, the game also hosts an exciting way to improve your chances of winning.

In this guide, we will look at what this feature is, what else this lottery game offers and how you can buy Portugal Totoloto tickets online.

About Portugal Totoloto

This popular game was first launched way back in 1988, though when first launched it used a 6/45 format.

From there, it moved to a 6/49 format before finally settling on its current structure on March 16, 2011.

The game is operated by Jogos Santa Casa. This state-run gaming body is responsible for all lotteries that take place in Portugal.

Portugal Totoloto Draws

There are two draws held each week on Wednesday and Saturday at 10 pm CET.

They are conducted at Jogos Santa Casa's headquarters in Lisbon.

Portugal Totoloto LogoHow to Play Portugal Totoloto

The lottery uses a double-matrix (5/49 + 1/13) format.

This means that whenever you buy a lottery ticket, you will need to select five numbers from a pool ranging from 1 to 49.

After this, you will need to choose a single number from a pool ranging between 1 and 13. This single number is known as the Número da Sorte (aka the Lucky Number).

You can choose to select your own number or opt to play using the quick pick option. Like with any other lottery, this is pretty standard and allows a random number generator to select your numbers for you.

If you want to improve your chances of winning, you can opt to play using Multiple Stakes mode. This lets you choose up to 11 numbers rather than the standard five.

These numbers are then played in every different five number combination. We must note, however, that this style of play is pricey.

Portugal Totoloto Prizes and Odds

To win the Portugal Totoloto jackpot, you will need to match all five standard numbers and the Lucky Number.

The jackpot odds are 1 in 24,789,492.

These odds are pretty good for a lottery that offers a minimum jackpot of €1 million.

A comparable lottery would be Italy SuperEnalotto, which has a minimum jackpot of €2 million. While the minimum jackpot amount is double that of Totoloto, the odds of winning are 1 in 622,614,630.

However, these odds are less great when you look at the maximum jackpots offered by the two lotto games. In that case, SuperEnalotto beats Portugal Totoloto by a whopping €158.8 million.

What also makes these odds great is that you get these odds for just €0.90 per play (if you are playing in Portugal).

The low price makes this lottery affordable and has added to its popularity.

Aside from the jackpot, there are an additional five prize tiers. Each of these has decent odds, and you can even win a prize by matching just the Lucky Number.

Sadly, there are no published amounts that these tiers are worth. Instead, the lottery states the percentage available of the prize fund for each tier.

Below are the six available prize tiers:
